IAN EMERY

I'm a software designer based in Boston.

Like many designers, my path to this career wasn't a straight line. I graduated with degrees in Philosophy and Broadcast Journalism, and found my way to helping customers trade stocks, options and mutual funds.  Listening every day for 7 years to tens of thousands of stories of why people were saving, investing, and trading gave me a life-long empathy for users and their experiences.  I took that empathy with me when I moved into building software, first as a systems analyst, then as a designer.  

 Designing experiences that engage and inform is my passion, and hopefully I'm making people's lives just a little bit better.  As a former Scrum Master, I believe very strongly in process, and incorporating design (and designers) into the process of building software.  The closer designers can be to the team, integrating with both the product and technology teams, the better the results.  I've worked on some very high performing teams, and this was the single characteristic they all had in common.

I’ve had the opportunity to work on a number of incredible projects that allowed me to grow and become a better designer, and I've highlighted a few of them here.
